Role

Project Overview

I was tasked with designing a report builder for Cometly. The goal was to create an intuitive, interactive tool that would allow users to generate customizable reports, select various graph options, choose data sources, apply metrics, and filters, and then integrate these reports into a dynamic custom dashboard.

Objectives

1

User Empowerment

Enable users to create and customize reports tailored to their specific needs.

2

Interactivity

Provide a range of interactive options for users to visualize data effectively.

3

Integration

Allow users to add customized reports to a personalized dashboard for easy access and ongoing monitoring.

Research & Discovery

1

Competitive Analysis

Reviewed similar report-building tools to identify industry standards and potential areas for differentiation.

2

Persona Development

Created personas representing typical users of the CRM, including sales managers, analysts, and executives, to guide design decisions.

Persona

Background

Name: Samantha Green
Age: 34
Job Title: Sales Operations Manager
Industry: Technology
Experience: 10 years in sales operations and analytics

Demographics

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, MBA with a focus on Analytics
Location: San Francisco, CA
Work Environment: Works in a mid-sized technology company with a team of 20 in the sales department

Goals

1

Data Driven Decisions

Samantha aims to make strategic decisions based on comprehensive sales data and market trends.

2

Custom Reporting

She needs to generate tailored reports to track performance metrics, sales targets, and campaign effectiveness.

3

Streamline Workflow

Wants to automate report generation and integrate data into a central dashboard for real-time insights.

Challenges

1

Complex Data

Handling large volumes of sales data from various sources can be overwhelming and time-consuming.

2

Limited Reporting Tools

Existing tools are either too rigid or require extensive manual effort to customize reports.

3

Integration Issues

Difficulty in consolidating data from different systems into a unified report.

Wireframing

My original thought was to make the view a more top to bottom approach. That way the user could start with the most important options at the beginning and then see their report being generated afterwards. Ultimately, this didn't feel natural when the report preview was below the fold. As a user, I would want to see my changes in realtime, and watch the data update.

Final Designs

Graph Options: Users can choose from various graph types, including bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, and more. Each option includes interactive elements such as tooltips and hover effects to enhance data exploration.

Source and Metrics Selection: Integrated a user-friendly interface for selecting data sources and metrics. Implemented drag-and-drop functionality for easy configuration.

Filtering: Provided advanced filtering options to allow users to refine their reports based on specific criteria such as date ranges, regions, and sales teams.

Custom Dashboard Integration: Enabled users to save custom reports and add them to a personal dashboard. The dashboard offers a dynamic view where users can rearrange, resize, and interact with their reports in real-time.

Results

1

Enhanced User Experience

Users reported a significant improvement in their ability to create and customize reports efficiently. The interactive elements made data visualization more intuitive and engaging.

2

Increased Adoption

The new report builder and dashboard integration led to higher user adoption rates and more frequent use of the CRM platform's reporting features.

3

Positive user feedback

sers appreciated the flexibility of the tool and the ability to tailor reports to their specific needs. The interactive nature of the graphs and filters was particularly well-received.
